If the pant’s (trousers) hems are at ankles can they be folded before performing salah (Namaz)?
If pant’s(trousers) bottoms are at ankle it is not allowed to fold them to perform salah (namaz), perform the salah (Namaz) without folding them. If pant’s (trousers) hems are kept below ankles BECAUSE OF PRIDE, it is HARAM, in this case Namaz (salah) will be Makrooh-e-Tehreemi (Wajib to repeat Namaz {salah}) otherwise it’s only Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi which is Khilafe Aula in Namaz (salah) and its not wajib to repeat the salah(namaz) in this case. Same is written in Fatawa-e-Rizvia in part three on page 448.
In case of folding the pants (trousers) hems in Namaz(salah) will definitely be Makrooh-e-Tehreemi which will make it Wajib to perform the Namaz(salah) again. It’s in Hadees :
Sahih Muslim Book: 004, Number: 0993:
“Ibn ‘Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had been commanded to prostrate on seven (bones) AND FORBIDDEN TO FOLD BACK HAIR AND CLOTHING.”
Sahih al-Bukhari: Volume: 1, Book: 12, Number: 773
“Ibn Abbas (radiAllahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallAllahu alaihi wa aalihi wa sallam) was ordered [by Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'Ala] to prostrate on seven parts AND NOT TO TUCK UP THE CLOTHES OR HAIR [WHILE PRAYING]. Those parts are: the forehead [along with the tip of nose], both hands, both knees, and [toes of] both feet.”
In light of these two Ahadith the Ulama have stated that turning up your trousers to pray salaah(namaz) is makrooh-e-tahreemi and would therefore make your salaah wajib to repeat. Having your trousers below the ankles on purpose due to pride or arrogance is haraam. If your trousers are below the ankles for any other reason then it is makrooh-e-tanzeehi and this would not make it wajib to repeat your salaah.
ANSWERING MISCONCEPTION REGARDING THE HADITH OF TROUSER BELOW THE ANKLES IN HELL FIRE
Some ignorant people quote the following hadiths and derive wrong meanings from them:
Sahi Bukhari Vol: 7, Book: 72. Dress. Hadith: 678:
“Narrated By Abu Huraira (r.a.): The Prophet said, “The part of an Izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”
Sahih Muslim, Book: 001, Hadith: 0192
“It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr (r.a.) that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) observed: “Three are the (persons) with whom Allah (swt) would neither speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor would look at them nor would absolve them and there is a painful chastisement for them.” The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) repeated it three times. Abu Dharr (r.a.) remarked: “They failed and they lost; who are these persons, Messenger of Allah (pbuh)?” Upon this He (pbuh) observed: “They are: the dragger of lower garment, the recounter of obligation the seller of goods by false oath.”
Sahih Muslim, Book: 001, Hadith: 0193
“It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr (r.a.) who narrates that the Prophet (pbuh) observed: “Three are the persons with whom Allah (swt) would not speak on the Day of Resurrection: the bestower of gift who does not give anything but by laying obligation on him, the seller of goods who sells them by taking false oath and one who hangs low his lower garment.”
Abu Dawood, al-Salaah, 543:
“It was reported in a hadeeth narrated by Abu Dawood that Abu Hurayrah said: “Whilst a man was praying with his izaar (lower garment) hanging below his ankles, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Go and do wudoo’.”… He said, “He was praying with his izaar hanging below his ankles, and Allaah does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his izaar hang below his ankles.”
TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ABOVE HADITHS:
By quoting the above hadiths they say that if our pants(trousers) falls below the ankles then we should fold them while performing the salah(namaz) in order to keep the pants(trousers) above the ankles. But folding them in the salah will be against the hadith as quoted in the starting of the article. Above hadiths does not say that we should keep our (pants) trousers up by folding only in salah(namaz) but it says to wear clothes above the Ankles. Folding pant in namaz is Forbiden as quoted in the starting of the article (It is Proven From Sahi hadith from Bukhari & muslim).
Imam Nawawi (r.a.), who is the authority amongst the salafi-wahabi, while explaining the above hadiths states that: “As for the Prophet’s saying: “the one who makes his garment hang down on the ground” then its meaning is: The one who lets it down and drags its extremity OUT OF ARROGANCE (KHAYLA’) as has been mentioned by way of explanation (of the same phrase) in the other Ahadith [in Bukhari and Muslim]: “Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’ala) will not look at a person WHO DRAGS HIS LOWER GARMENT IN ARROGANCE.” Khayla’ is self-aggrandizement (kibar), and this restricted (muqayyad) meaning of letting down the garment as consisting in dragging it (al-jarr) OUT OF ARROGANCE reduces the general sense of the person who lets down the lower garment to a specific sense and indicates that the one meant by the threat of punishment is the one who does so out of arrogance.”
Following hadiths will be suffient to provide the meaning of the above hadiths:
Sahih Bukhari Vol: 7, Book: 72. Dress. Hadith: 679
(Same as in Abu Dawood, Alsunnan, kitab al hamam, bab maja fi isbal alizar, 4:56, raqm 4084) :
“Narrated By Abu Huraira (Raji Allah-Anho):: Allah’s Apostle, “Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection (Kayamat), at a person who drags his izar (behind him) OUT OF PRIDE AND ARROGANCE.”
Abu Dawood (27:4082):
“Abdur Rahman said: I asked Abu Sa’id al-Khudri about wearing lower garment. He said: You have come to the man who knows it very well. The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) said: The way for a believer to wear a lower garment is to have it halfway down his legs and he is guilty of no sin if it comes halfway between that and the ankles, but what comes lower than the ankles is in Hell. On the day of Resurrection, Allah will not look at him who trails his lower garment CONCEITEDLY.”
Sahi Bukhari Volume: 7 Book: 72 Hadith: 675
( same as in Bukhari, al sahi, kitab: fazail al sahabt, bab qawl Al Nabi pbuh, 3:1345, raqm: 3465) :
“The Prophet said Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection at the person who drags his garment (behind him) OUT OF CONCEIT. On that Abu Bakr said, “O Allah’s Apostle! One side of my Izar hangs low if I do not take care of it.” The Prophet said, ‘You are not one of those who do that OUT OF CONCEIT.”
Imam Nawawi (r.a.) states: “The Prophet (pbuh) permitted Sayyidinah Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (r.a.) to do so (i.e. let down his lower garment) BECAUSE HE TRAILED IT FOR A REASON OTHER THAN ARROGANCE. Imam Abu Ja`far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (r.a.) and others said: “The letting down of the lower garment was mentioned by itself because it is their most common garment, but the ruling concerning other garments such as the shirt and others, is the same ruling.” I [Nawawi] say: “This has been made plain to us explicitly in the hadith from the Prophet (r.a.) on the authority of Salim ibn `Abd Allah (r.a.) from his father: “The letting down (isbal) pertains to the lower garment, the shirt, and the turban. WHOEVER DRAGS SOMETHING OUT OF ARROGANCE ALLAH (SWT) WILL NOT LOOK AT HIM ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION.” Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhum) narrated it with a fair chain. And Allah (swt) knows best.”
Sahih bukhari:
“Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r.a.) said that, “We were sitting with the Beloved Prophet (pbuh) and there was a solar eclipse. The Beloved Prophet (pbuh) quickly got up, in the state that, when he was rushing his tahband (his lower garment) was touching the ground until he entered the Masjid with the people. And in that same state the Beloved Prophet (pbuh) offered his Salaat ul-Qusoof (solar salaah)”
Above Hadith In Roman Urdu:
“Muhammad bin Salam ne bayan kiya kaha hum ko abdullah ne khabar de oonhe younus ne. oonhe imaam hasa basary ne aur oon se abu bakar radiyallahu anhu ne bayan kiya k suraj grahan hota to hum nabi kareem(pbuh) k saath the. Aap(pbuh) jaldi me kapda ghasit te hue masjid me tashrif laae log bhi jama ho gaye. Huzur(pbuh) ne do rakat namaz padhai, grahan khatam ho gaya tab Huzur(pbuh) hamary taraf mutawajjeh hue aur farmaya suraj aur chand ALLAH ki nishaani me se do nishaniya hai is liye jab tum in nishaniyo me se koi nishaani dekho to namaz padho aur ALLAH se dua karo yaha tak k wo khatam na ho jaye.”
(volume 7, book 72,5785, sahih bukhari, bab: agar kisi ka kapda aise hi latak jaaye takabbbu ki niyyat na ho to gunahgaar nahi)
In the above Hadith the Beloved Prophet (pbuh) is offering salaah whilst his blessed tahband is touching the ground, which definitely means his blessed tahband was lower than his ankles.
There are Islamic rules to be learnt from all the Ahadith quoted:
1. It is always best to follow the way of the Beloved Prophet (pbuh) and to keep your clothing above your ankles due to the fact this is Afzal and is Awla.
2. If pant’s hems are kept below ankles BECAUSE OF PRIDE, it is HARAM, in this case Namaz will be Makrooh-e-Tehreemi (Wajib to repeat Namaz).
3. If somebody’s clothing sometimes falls below the ankle but he doesn’t do this out of takkabur then this is makrooh-e-tanzeehi, it is disliked but it is not haraam or makrooh-e-tahreemi.
4. Folding your clothing from the bottom of the trousers or your lower
garment, is known as kaf-e-sawb (the folding of garments) and in the
blessed Ahadith we have been told not to do this, it is not permissible, it is Mam’noo. Therfore the brothers who perform the kaf-e-sawb only
for salaah they are doing wrong. It is Makrooh-e-Tehreemi which will make it Wajib to perform the salah (Namaz) again.
Verily, Allah Subhan Wa Ta’Ala and HIS Messenger know the best !
NOW FOLDING CLOTHES BEFORE NAMAZ ISNT NEW INVENTION (BIDAAH) IN ISLAM???
